Still clearing out the Inbox. There is more Doom than we can handle just once a week.
Item Winner! Dumbest Combined Tweet-Headline-Story Of all Time. Amid pretty stiff competition, too.
Former Vatican ambassador’s explosive letter reveals influence of conservative Catholic media network https://t.co/DTnixZBQPF

Reveals pervert-homosexual network? No. Reveals child abuse network? No. Reveals scandalous power network? No. Reveals existence of conservative Catholic media? Ah. Yes. That’s it.
That’s a tweet from girly Washington Post Robert Costa who was as horrified as a teenage girl that So-and-So was seen with YouKnowWho that Peter Brimelow was seen having dinner at a friend’s house, when to this girly man Brimelow should have been purged from society. Costa presented this as news. And got an article in his paper. If you think you make the list of screechers like Costa, you think wrong.
Protesters toppled the Silent Sam Confederate statue on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill on Monday night.
The monument was ripped down after 9:15 p.m. Earlier in the evening, protesters covered the statue with tall, gray banners, erecting “an alternative monument” that said, in part, “For a world without white supremacy.”
Protesters were apparently working behind the covering with ropes to bring the statue down, which happened more than two hours into a rally. It fell with a loud clanging sound, and the crowd erupted in cheers.
After Silent Sam tumbled to the ground, people darted in and out of the crowd through a haze from smoke bombs. Atop the statue someone placed a black cap that said, “Do It Like Durham,” an apparent reference to the toppling of a Confederate statue there a year ago.
Curiously, no authority had the courage to fire upon the rabble. That they did not is telling. An obese activist inaptly named Little announced the criminal purpose of the mob. But this caused no authority to act either. Violence works, as the criminals proved. And will continue to work.
Of course, some of the other ideas floated for “representation” would change the character in crucial, and therefore unacceptable, ways. Casting a female as “Jane Bond” would certainly alter the character in essential ways. And given how central “Bond girls” are to the character and to the franchise, the same applies to the idea of a gay James Bond. Likewise, although a pious Bond might be a better role model, he would be much less like James Bond…
The Bond franchise is not a period piece, forever stuck in the age of its origin. It has moved with the times, and so the possibility of the leading man having dark skin is simply the logical product of realistic casting. There are undoubtedly black Brits successfully working as agents in Her Majesty’s real secret service. In all likelihood, there were some back when Ian Fleming created James Bond, but they were unlikely to be written up as the main character of a spy thriller. That it is now culturally possible to imagine Bond as a black man is genuine progress (and it is possible — after all, the British royal family just welcomed a multiracial American).
First, “conservative” is finished as a term to describe reality and tradition lovers. Don’t use it anymore. Use “reactionary”, or some other unadulterated substitute.
Second, I haven’t been to the movies—except Climate Hustle, in which Yours Truly became a movie star, and therefore worthy of adulation and worship—in many years. So I don’t give a damn what movie makers destroy.
Third, the only argument that’s interesting is that Bond was meant to be the quintessential Englishman, and that meant a white man. Doubtless, as the conservative said, there are real-life secret trans female pedophiles, or the Lord knows what, working in Her Majesty’s real secret service. That does not then mean the new J. Bond (we cannot presume the James) should be one.
Zimmerman, a Jewish American living in Israel, quickly became a person of interest after telling the border agent that she worked for an Israeli advocacy group that assists Palestinians. She says that led to a series of “super-charged” questions about her professional activities and political views…
A series of similar incidents at Israeli border crossings has highlighted a growing gulf between the country’s hard-line government and liberal Jewish Americans who say they support Israel but oppose its policies on issues including religion, President Donald Trump and especially the continued occupation of the West Bank.
This shift already appears to be having important implications for what historically has been a close relationship built on almost unquestioning bipartisan support. Some Jewish leaders have begun to criticize Israeli policies publicly, and some predict that the Democratic Party — home to an estimated 70 percent of American Jews — could soon turn away from its support for Israel.
If it’s good enough for Israel, it’s good enough for us. Right? Let’s have real border control!
Item Animal crackers’ animals “freed” as boxes get new look (Thanks to Sheri for the link.)
After more than a century behind bars, the beasts on boxes of animal crackers are roaming free.
Mondelez International, the parent company of Nabisco, has redesigned the packaging of its Barnum’s Animals crackers after relenting to pressure from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
Real progress will only be made when we begin putting PETA behind bars.
