I suppose Apple—corporation—would be happy

Sigh. I wonder why these Enlightened souls bother with school. They have already told themselves that they know everything there is worth knowing.

The only other thing worth noting—the video speaks, loudly, for itself—is that I recall reading that many of the students emailed their professors asking to be excused from assignments, tests, and the like while they were holed up. Never reported was what their professors replied.

  1. “Never reported was what their professors replied.”

I’d love to see some, but I suppose that would be a privacy violation. I know how I would have responded, however.

  2. “A consensus means that everyone agrees to say collectively what no one believes individually.” – Abba Eban, Israeli statesman, diplomat, and scholar.

  3. Out of curiosity….What do the students want? I googled, found they supposedly have specific demands, but I couldn’t find any compilation of their demands.

  4. I’ve never been so ashamed to own a Macbook. And a charger. And headphones.

But then, I’ve never been so proud of my suit.

  5. From Lucia link to student demands:

“A Socially Responsible Finance Committee that will immediately investigate war profiteers and the lifting of the Coke ban. ”

Uh!! I guess you had to be there to understand what the hell that sentence actually means.

  6. I googled to learn more about the coke ban. NYU banned coca cola in 2005.

New York University will move ahead with its previously announced ban on the sale of products produced by the Coca-Cola Company. The decision was made in accordance with a resolution passed by the New York University Senate on Nov. 3, which had given the Coca-Cola Company until Dec. 8 to agree to a third-party protocol that would lead to an “independent investigation into allegations of the Coca-Cola Company’s complicity in human rights violations” in Colombia. The resolution passed by a vote of 28 to 10.

Products will be pulled from vending machines and shelves on campus beginning Friday, Dec. 9, 2005. The ban will apply to all Coca-Cola products, including the Coca-Cola, Minute Maid, and Dasani brands.

    Details here.

Presumably, since the coke ban has not been lifted, some still believe coke was complicit in these human right violations? But the students still want their coke? Or maybe they think Coca-Cola has redeemed themselves? Who knows.

I don’t understand why the students didn’t form a circle and spend the time chanting their demands. Though, I suspect the problem was they had so many unrelated demands it was difficult to come up with a good slogan or chant.

  7. Correct. I guess they aren’t requesting the coke ban be lifted. They are demanding an investigation because it was lifted. Ok.. that may explain the mystery mumbling about corporate water.

  8. I don’t blame people for not liking Coke. Everyone knows in their hearts that Pepsi is better.

Oh, and that video is great. I guess I respect their tenacity and all that, but wanting to be excused for missing class voluntarily? Sorry, but no. Even if I agreed with someone’s reasons for missing class (not that it should matter, mind you), I always said that fairness was treating students as equally as humanly possible.

I mean, I even had to knock points of a student who skipped section for San Diego ComicCon!

  9. lucia:
Thanks that adds information and a little more context. Unfortunately, the structure of the sentence and the juxtaposing of war profiteers and Coca Cola still has me bemused. Looks to me that some parents, taxpayers and alumnae are wasting their money.

  10. I had no idea what a Kimmel was before some googling. Which turned up what may be the most [unintentionally] insightful comment on the whole affair (third paragraph from the bottom):

“I am concerned that any protest Oxfam would take on in the future would be written off as some hippie nonsense the same way the TBNYU occupation was.”

    If only.

Maybe it was the voice, or whatever, but I kept picturing the narrator as Jim from “The Office.” And the whole thing was him sending up Dwight or something. But even “The Office” isn’t this absurd.

  11. I liked the kid who kept dropping the F-bombs. At least he some personality and wasn’t interested in using any “consensus process to move forward”. Hahahaha!
